Worcester Polytechnic Institute invites applications for postdoctoral positions in the research group of Professor Shawn Burdette. The first project involves the development of photocaged zinc complexes and/or the application of these photocages to biological studies. Photocaged complexes release a metal ion upon exposure to light that allow signaling pathways in cells to be mapped. A second project incorporates aspects of polymer chemistry with fluorescent sensors for copper.  Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) is a temperature-responsive polymer and current efforts seek to exploit structural changes in detection of metal ions in solution. The Burdette group has developed several photoactive complexes that release zinc upon exposure to light. Initial appointments are for one year with the possibility of reappointments for a second year.

The successful applicant will have received Ph.D. in Chemistry before beginning the appointment and will have a strong background in synthetic chemistry and/or biochemistry. Interested parties should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae including the names of three references, a letter of recommendation from a current advisor, and a short statement of purpose. The statement of purpose should describe the applicant’s project of interest and how their background and skills will facilitate project success.
