POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE
Department of Chemistry
Brandeis University (Waltham, MA)
Research Group of Prof. Christine M. Thomas
Synthetic Inorganic, Organometallic and Bioinorganic Chemistry
A postdoctoral position in synthetic inorganic/organometallic chemistry is
available in Prof. Thomas’s group at the Department of Chemistry at Brandeis
University. The position is available August 1, 2008, or until filled, and is a 1 year
position with the possibility for extension contingent on performance. A wide range of
research projects are available, including but not limited to (1) design of complexes
active towards small molecule activation and electrocatalytic conversion of abundant
small molecules into useful, renewable fuels, (2) synthesis and investigation of new
ligands and main group compounds, (3) heterogeneous catalysis using resin-bound
organometallic complexes, and (4) synthesis and investigation of small molecule models
of metalloenzyme active sites. For more information of Prof. Thomas’s research interests,
see: people.brandeis.edu/~thomasc/index.HTML
Candidates with a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry, adequate publication record, and
a strong background in the synthesis of ligands and transition metal complexes are
encouraged to apply. The applicant should have experience in air-sensitive techniques
including both glovebox and Schlenk line work. In addition to synthesis, candidates are
expected to be familiar with a range of characterization techniques, particularly multi-
nuclear NMR, UV-Vis and IR spectroscopies, and X-ray crystallography. Extensive
experience with electrochemistry (cyclic voltammetry, bulk electrolysis), EPR
spectroscopy, and computational (Gaussian) techniques are desirable, but not required.
Interested and qualified applicants should send a cover letter, a CV, and the
names of 2-3 references to: thomasc@brandeis.edu.
Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it.
