Phase diagram of nitrous oxide: analogy with carbon dioxide. Iota, V.; Park, J-H.; Yoo, C. S. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, CA, USA. Abstract
The phase diagram for nitrous oxide (N2O) was derived from in situ high pressure and temp. Raman and x-ray diffraction studies. Two new phases (II and IV) are discovered >600 K between 18 and 50 GPa; both are quenchable to ambient temp. The crystal structures and stability fields of N2O phases are similar to those of CO2 <50 GPa and 800 K. However, subtle differences were found in their phys. properties and crystal structures, indicating an increased disparity (or ionicity) between N-N and N-O bonds in bent N2O-IV (Pbcn). The present results thus explain the divergence obsd. at higher pressures and temps.; N2O disproportionates into ionic NO+NO3- and N2, whereas CO2 polymerizes into an extended covalent solid.

Abstract
The structures and phase transitions of N2O were studied by powder x-ray diffraction in a W carbide anvil device from about 100 to 300 K and 2 to 12 GPa. Two solid phases, .alpha.-N2O and .beta.-N2O, were obsd. The .alpha. pattern is consistent with the known low-pressure low-temp. ordered cubic form, space group Pa3, up to 4.8 GPa where transition to a new .beta. solid occurs. From refinements using photog. x-ray intensities, the .beta.-N2O structure was detd. to be orthorhombic Cmca. There are 4 mols. in a unit cell with a 4.954, b 4.497, and c 6.201 .ANG. at 5.81 GPa and 298 K. The mol. axes lie parallel to the bc plane and are tipped at an angle of 37.2° to the b axis. Random head-to-tail orientation is probable in both solids. The phase diagram and values of the molar volume for N2O are compared with published data for the isoelectronic mol. CO2. Recent theor. calcns. correctly predict the .beta.-N2O structure.
Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it.
